Week Six: Free Form – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week Six: Free Form

I think these past few days it has been hitting me that we are nearing the end of the program and that my time with my organization is slowly coming to an end. I had a meeting with my mentor the other day and we were talking about all the projects I would need to finish up before I leave. It feels a little bittersweet that it’s almost over and I cannot believe how fast time flew by. But I am excited to finish the things I am assigned and have enjoyed helping out my organization and getting to know everyone.

It has been pretty interesting, though, to learn about the city of Detroit and how nuances all the issues are. Even though I grew up a short drive away from the city, I have never taken the time to delve into its politics and the issues that plague the city. I realize that it is a privilege to be able to learn about those issues than to firsthand experience them. But I am glad to have taken part in some of the organizations that work with the community and been (a small) part of the change.

  1. Zainab, I definitely agree that time is flying! It’s really impactful to deepen your perspective of a place that has been so close to you for so long. I hope your experience here and with DCERP has been amazing!

    Hi Zainab,

I also agree that it has been a wonderful experience getting to learn about Detroit and its communities. I am also excited to wrap up my research so that my site could use it during the school year to find ways to help a lot of the students missing school due to being homeless.
