This summer, I am working with LGBT Detroit, an organization that evolved to create supportive spaces, resources, and programs for black and brown LGBTQ+ individuals within the city. LGBT Detroit originally began as a magazine called KICK which highlighted black LGBTQ+ life, and as the years progressed, it transformed into a non-profit organization. Now, their main projects include broadcasts dedicated to discussing relevant topics related to being both POC and queer, leadership programs, HIV awareness and de-stigmatization campaigns, and organizing thoughtful community events. Although they have shifted from being a magazine brand, they still actively highlight creative endeavors and artistry in their organization. Regarding my involvement, specifically, I will be aiding with their broadcast productions, tracking their social media engagement, capturing digital content, and participating in most of their community events. So far, this has been an amazing experience! Last Sunday, I was invited to march with my organization during the Annual Motor City Pride Parade. That was my first time going to a pride event, and it was so moving for me to see how many individuals either identify with or support our community. Everyone in LGBT Detroit I work with or have spoken to is so inviting, warm, and open. I look forward to seeing how our relationships progress as the summer goes on! Outside of LGBT Detroit, I haven’t unfortunately been able to interact much with most of the other fellows due to my dedication to exploring the city after work. However, from the interactions we’ve had so far, all of my fellows seem very friendly and kind, so I hope to spend more time getting to know them throughout this experience. A great way to start would be during our exploration learning group trips. I would love to visit the 31st Anniversary of the Concert of Colors on July 20th or Detroit’s Black Wall Street Presents “Past Forward” on July 21st. Also, from July 14th through July 16th, LGBT Detroit will be hosting its Pride event Hotter Than July; there will be food, live music, performances, and prizes, so come out if you’re free!
