Week Two Blog – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week Two Blog

Hi everyone! It’s almost the end of week two of working at the City of Detroit’s Office of Disability Affairs (ODA). So far, it has been an open and welcoming experience that I’m excited to continue working in. The ODA’s mission is to create a city that is more accessible for persons with disabilities by improving the quality of life and opportunities within it. My project is about increasing accessibility in healthcare for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. I’ll be looking into the current laws in place and coming up with suggestions for improvement. Outside of work, I’ve also been getting to know everyone else in DCERP. We have a group chat to suggest different activities (yoga, exploring, etc) to do together after work. I’m excited about getting to know everyone a bit more and about the plans we make along the way.

  1. Hi Emily! Your work at ODA sounds so cool and I can’t wait to hear more about what you’re learning in the coming weeks about accessibility! The specific focus of your project in healthcare for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community is really interesting and is an aspect of accessibility many people don’t consider. I’m glad you’ve been trying a lot of fun activities in Detroit that people discuss in the group chat and I can’t wait for future DCERP cohort hangouts!
