Week Six – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week Six

Now that we only have like three weeks left, I’m starting to think about leaving my site, and it’s kinda sad. I feel like I’ve really gotten into my project and gotten to know my coworkers, so I’m definitely gonna have to come back and visit. I’ve started a couple of projects that have let me get more connected with the community. One is bringing flyers to local businesses to advertise for our initiatives including the farmers market and our home improvement program. The home improvement program is something I started recently where residents of hope village were able to get free repairs on their houses, and I had to go to each house and take pictures for this program. This let me see more of the neighborhood I was working in and meet some of the people that live there. I got to meet a lot of people and see a lot of the community I’m working in, and I really appreciate that.

  1. Hi Marie, thanks for your share! I’m glad you’ve gotten to know the community you work in pretty well and that you’ve been able to be a part of a few different projects to learn about the different things that your org does. I’ve also been thinking about what it will mean to leave my site, and it makes me nervous! I’m already thinking about how and when I’ll visit the organization and my coworkers.

  2. Hi Marie, I’ve also been thinking about how quickly everything is going to end soon, and how much I’m gonna miss my site and Detroit! Having the chance to distribute flyers last week (slightly similar to what you mentioned doing) has also allowed me to get to know the neighborhood a bit more.
