WEEK 1 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

WEEK 1

Hey Danielle,

It’s already June and you’re on to a whole new adventure for the rest of the summer. This has already been a big summer for you- spending May managing the greenhouse has already taught you a lot about yourself. Remember to keep learning throughout the summer, and take each new day as one that can teach you even more. You’re getting such a fantastic opportunity with this program, and you need to make the most of it.

You have spent a lot of time in Detroit already, but don’t use this as a crutch. Continue to learn, experience, ask questions and be present. I know it’s difficult when you have so much on your mind; this is, after all, your last summer as an undergraduate. Take a step back, however. You still have so much to learn.

Nortown has been a new experience already. Last year at your internship, there were people close to your age working at Living Arts with whom you could relate. This year, with only two main employees far from your age, it’s more difficult. This has its strengths as well though, and don’t forget that. There is wisdom far beyond your years roaming Nortown. Remember to speak up if you have a thought, when it is appropriate, but also remember to listen and learn as much as you possibly can. This is what you’re interested in, and this summer will let you know if it’s right for you. Don’t get frustrated because things aren’t happening the way you would do them; use it as a learning experience instead. Give your all to Nortown this summer. You don’t usually have a problem with that, but remember this is an organization that can really use the resources you provide, without forgetting you can also really use the resources they provide.

Also remember to step outside your comfort zone this summer. For example, I know that making cold calls and striking up conversation with random people scares the crap out of you, but it will help make the experience more meaningful. Stay open minded.

And lastly, dummy, remember to double check where you park. You can’t afford any more parking tickets!

  1. It’s really intimidating working with a bunch of “real” adults, huh? I know that feel, bro. I think that although you may have some insecurities now, you’ll face them and grow this summer. ^_^
