MSA – Getting busier – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

MSA – Getting busier

This past week got even busier with it being the last week half of the workplace would be here which involved getting a ton of work done as well as restructuring everyone’s work schedule. I kept working at the parks and recreation literature review, I found a ton of good resources and also gaps in the communities and what we could do to help revitalize their parks and recreation services as well as being more inclusive to the communities. However, when  I sit down to write my literature review  (once I have narrowed down the literature), I find gaps in what I am trying to portray and then do more research. Maybe, I am overdoing this literature review and just need to get down some general research. I am unfortunately sometimes too detailed oriented and I end up backtracking and cutting out details and writing out the summaries of what I am saying (all part of the long thinking process). Sorry for writing this out, just needed to get some of my personal frustrations across. I am just concerned I won’t be able to finish all my literature reviews by the deadline mark (June 28th) although Emily did say she was completely willing to move it up to July 5th because this time was also meant for research.

A very awesome opportunity also came up this past Friday to go to a seminar hosted by mobilize.org. Here is part of their mission statement:

Mobilize.org believes that in order to create long-term, sustainable and community based solutions to the challenges facing our generation, Millennials (young adults born between the years 1976 and 1996) must authentically engage their peers in identifying problems, proposing solutions, and most importantly, must work together to implement these solutions on their campuses and in their communities.

The two keynote speakers were Raquel Castaneda-Lopez (Wayne State University) and Rebecca M. Thompson (United Way of Southeastern Michigan). The seminar was about a meet up for millennial leaders trying to path a way from college to career. It had a ton of workshops in developing skills as well as discovering the importance of millennial input in revitalization efforts in Detroit. I met entrepreneurs and young people who all were hoping for change. I learned quite a bit from them and was truly inspired by the projects they were starting up. It was a really great opportunity and filled me up with a lot of hope.
