THE TOUR and COMMUNITY – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

THE TOUR and COMMUNITY

I was extremely proud of our accomplishments during the week of June 10th.  On Wednesday Me, Amy and Rhonda (aka the team) presented our survey and community assistance ideas to the downriver minister’s alliance.  We did this presentation because we are aware that receiving their support could significantly help us in our research.   Our presentation went well and overall I think we have gained the support of the powerful downriver ministerial alliance! Along with this community interaction we took our first tour of southwest, Detroit.  Being a Detroit resident I tend to think I know all about my city…WRONG.  Southwest Detroit is far different than the area I was born and raised.  Very different but a good different, I noticed a lot of diversity, well-kept communities and seemingly successful businesses.  The only depressing and personally upsetting part of our tour of southwest were the industrial facilities.  These are some of the filthiest, most toxic and environmentally threatening facilities in the state and they all reside in one community.  These residents are forced to live with these industries and put up with all their crap.  Living in these highly polluted communities are literally killing are people.  The plus side of this is that both Amy and I are really excited to get involved with the community and make changes where we can.  We are looking forward to working with the community in making these changes and I am sure the community is eager to work with us as well.  Sooooo with that being said, there is a long summer ahead and we are and I believe we are still trying to find out EXACTLY what we will be doing but I think it will all work out great in the end 🙂
