Design Intern – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Design Intern

What started as a part time gig designing fliers has transformed into my full time creative design job at GRDC because my research project is done. Last week I created two documents “Suspicious Vehicle Guide” and “Suspicious Person Guide,” to help residents better report suspicious activity.

Now it might not look like much, but I am not what you call a creative person. I have no artistic inclination, so anything that comes out visually acceptable is a success in my book. I am now designing a Prezi to be used to educate residents about the Special Assessment District Ordinance. Even though I’m borrowing most of the content from a previous Powerpoint, the project might take all of this week because Prezis are quite finicky.

To be honest, I’m a little disappointed not to be doing any real research. I chose this fellowship specifically to gain research skills, as I haven’t had any real research experience in my three years of undergrad. But as we learned yesterday in seminar, design skills are really valued in some workplaces. I plan to work in the nonprofit world upon graduating, so this experience might come in handy.

UPDATE: As I mentioned in my last post, I wasn’t sure that I could use the above photo. So I went ahead and found a different drawing through Creative Commons. I then had to reformat the whole doc, but, hey, it’s all in the name of legality 🙂

  1. This is absolutely amazing!!
I know I already saw this in seminar, but now that I’m starting to work on design, this is so impressive to me because I have had SUCH a hard time with this. If you can…you should totally give me some tips, please = )

    1. Haha you’re the sweetest! I don’t know if I have any tips, but I’d love to talk it out with you 🙂
