This summer, I set several different goals for myself before coming to start my internship in Detroit. Most had to do with building professional skills and making a difference at my placement, seeing different areas and sites in Detroit, and expanding myself socially. However, there is also an important goal that I’ve been steadily working towards everyday that I spend here, and that is to improve my physical fitness. So basically, I wanted to improve my mind and body while here in Detroit 🙂
I’ve never been much of an avid exerciser, and whenever I do it, it’s because I feel the need to be healthier. Not to lose weight or anything like that. I thought with the ample amount of free time I’d have after work, I could put myself through a routine of exercise each day. I’ve always worked out in gyms, so I immediately headed over the to the indoor gym at Wayne State. However, once I found out that it was going to cost over $100 to work out there, I decided to make a new plan. I wasn’t a huge fan of the idea of working out/running outside. It’s summer, so it’s hot, and I didn’t want people staring at me as I huffed and puffed down city sidewalks. When a friend told me about Wayne State’s track/football field right over the bridge, I figured I could run the track everyday. Although there are people there each day, their sole purpose is also working out and have no time to form judgement towards me and my struggle to make it through each lap! At the track, there are people of all backgrounds and ages. There are young children playing or conditioning for sports teams as well as elderly adults who slowly walk laps to keep in shape. There are also regular runners like me who I see everyday and have become friendly with. Every other day there is a group of people lead by an instructor, and he often invites me to join their workout. We are about to complete week 7, and I can say that I definitely feel more healthy and not so breathless on my runs. I have seen improvement in my physique and my attitude towards working out! So a lot of things are being learned during the day at my internship, but when I’m on my own afterwards, I keep working to improve myself in more ways than one.
