Week Eight: Community Involvment – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week Eight: Community Involvment

I’ve been in Detroit for the past eight weeks and during this time I have learned a lot about what community means and what is needed from each individual in order for the community to prosper. The success of any community all depends on its citizens and the amount of work they each dedicate to it. Working at the office of operations for DPS has really given me the opportunity to be able to work on a project that is community based.

This summer I have been working on analyzing a DPS survey that majority of the students participated in during this school year. Some parts of the survey would be better if these students had more community engagement. It seems as though this is a huge problem in a lot of communities. The goal of the office of operations is to have all the DPS participating in this GO Green Challenge however as of now only a hand full are currently participating. Other community events that I have heard about is a public poetry events that I believe takes place every Friday night. According to past attenders of the event it  has a a very welcoming and open atmosphere which makes everybody at the event more open towards each other. Another community even that place is at the Eastern market. This is a place where local farmers bring their fresh produce to sell to the community at a reasonable price. These produce are healthy and grown by the locals which means they are investing in their  community. So Although some individuals may think Detroit is no longer the thriving city like it used to , they forgot it is still a community based city. Almost each and every individual puts in an effort because they know whatever they invest in their community will come back and help them .This is why community involvement is important.
