Remember a goal without a plan is just a wish. Make a plan for your goals and continue to strive for it. Walking away from the Green Garage with meaningful bonds with not only Detroit Food Academy, but more importantly the students will be the most inspiring. Understanding another person’s situation is important when working with students in Detroit, so do not forget to place yourself in their shoes as often as possible. While your personal goal is to create bonds, remember that the internship goal of telling the story of the students of Detroit will assist the bonds created, but also provide the opportunity to learn about how Detroit can shape the lives of others.

Here is some advice that will help you shy away from your quiet habits while also making this Summer meaningful for the students of Detroit Food Academy, the Green Garage, and the Storytellers Project:

  1. Voice your opinions to any audience that is willing to listen, you will never know when someone is willing to build off of your idea.
  2. Make small conversation, being in the Green Garage is a great opportunity to meet interesting people in Detroit and learn about the projects in the building.
  3. Ask for a challenge as you finish tasks that are assigned. Take the initiative of working on a project that you believe will not only be enjoyable, but also useful for the students’ future.
  4. Last but not least, enjoy working with the staff of Detroit Food Academy, meeting businesses in the Green Garage, and learning about the youth of Detroit.

****DO NOT FORGET TO LAUGH AT THE JOKES AND SMILE AT THE SMALL ACCOMPLISHMENTS BECAUSE THEY DESERVE IT.
