Week One: Letter to Self – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week One: Letter to Self

Dear Future Patrick,

You chose the perfect organization to get involved with the local community. The Detroit Food Academy provides opportunities to interact with young students who wish to operate their own businesses in the future. Already, I have met some very smart, charismatic youth whose personalities shine bright! My first week involved helping them prepare food for an event they organized. My supervisors Noam, Jen, and Yolanda are very down-to-earth, but also professional and efficient at what they do. Learn from them! My fellow DFA partner Destiny and I make a great team and will use our knowledge and experience to help guide these ambitious students with their academic and professional endeavors.

Green Garage Interns

To the left are interns you met at the Green Garage orientation. Be sociable and learn what you can from them! Explore new territory and see what you discover. There are many hidden treasures throughout Detroit, but it is up to you to take the initiative and search for them. So far, I have been pleasantly surprised with the growth of the inner-city. It is subtle, but encouraging! The Green Garage is a beautiful, eco-friendly building that provides an ideal work space. I love it! It would behoove you to learn more about the many organizations that collaborate with each other at the Green Garage. They are responsible for many of the positive changes observed throughout Detroit. So, make those connections! Learn how you could contribute and possibly start your own non-profit organization. Last, but not least, have fun!!

  1. It sounds like you had a great first week! I’m sure you’re going to have a wonderful time working with DFA this summer. Working with kids is so much fun, and it sounds like you get to work with some bright ones!

We definitely have a unique and exciting opportunity working at the Green Garage with so many different organizations coming together in such a cool space. I hope all of us interns can make the best of it!
