Week 1 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 1

Dear Shannon, You will now be working and living with people who do not know to call you Shanban. No, you did not give yourself this nickname but somehow all of your closest friends and family think they are the sole proprietors of this. I name. You will now be leaving your comfort zone. For the last 2 years you have spent all of you time with family and your closest friends…even ones from high school…but know will be a fish lost at sea. Alone with no one you really know. Luckily though you will be back in a city you grew up in. Now you get to see it from a completely different set of eyes. You have lived in Detroit, Southfield, and Ann Arbor and of course as life always goes you’re back where it all started. Make sure you try the greatest food go to the coolest events. Life is for the taking kid but always give back.  Work though! You have to remember that you’re here do do great work in the community no matter how large the scale. Hopefully your office will have windows but if it doesn’t just cry silent and dry tears. Remember all of themes sons in business that your parents have taught you. Have fun learning about the environment but I know it will be challenging considering you don’t know much coming in. Most of all have fun…plus coworkers might also give you really cool things like tickets to concerts…

  1. Hey Shannon, hopefully you are feeling a little bit more comfortable with your living situation after the first week. If you ever need someone to hang out with do not be afraid to connect with me, I am all for a fun time. Remember to smile at the little things and laugh at the corny jokes. XOXO Destiny
