Week 1: Dear Drew, It’s Drew. – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 1: Dear Drew, It’s Drew.

Are you there, self?

I know you’re at your Sierra Club internship right now, waiting for something to do, but it’s the first week–don’t fret if you’re a bit bored! I know you’ve had some mixed feelings about being back in Detroit. How do I know, you ask? Because I’m you, silly! I know it’s depressing being back home without granny, but she would be proud of you and your (er, our???) passion and dedication. You’re probably the most dedicated person I know, and I’m not saying that because I know you the best  ;). I’m saying that because it’s true! You care deeply about this city and its people, so I’m absolutely positive that you’ll use that drive to help the Sierra Club. You’ve got the knowledge, the passion, the expertise. All you need now is the confidence to go and kick ass like everyone knows you can!

I always wondered what was holding you back from maximizing your true potential. I may know a lot, but I don’t know everything… I think maybe you’re worried failing or looking stupid, but I don’t think that’s a possibility.

How can you fail at work when you’re interning at an organization that you respect deeply and allows you to do what you love? So what if there were other influential students there previously? You’re not at the Sierra Club to outshine them– you’re there to contribute to shutting down pollutant spewing factories in the area. Your supervisor and other workers adore you already, why worry?

Are you worried about making friends and getting along with everyone else? That trip to Japan may have killed your faith in human beings, but something tells me that the people in this group are great. On top of that, you already have a close friend here and all of your flatmates and others you’ve encountered seem to like you. You may think that you won’t be able to make friends, but people love you and love being around you, why worry?

You may not expect a lot so far, but trust me, you will meet and surpass your expectations. You’ll make a contribution to your org and you’ll make some good friends. You may not have thought of this, but I did. You will also identify your vulnerabilities and work on them so they will no longer get in the way of living a happy life.

Well yeah… that got really profound really fast.

Have fun, grow, learn, and get off of Facebook. <3

  1. Hey Drew! I like the use of questions in your blog post. I also like that I’m following your train of thought; it feels really genuine. Keep up the gif use in your posts 😀 I’m excited to know you better as we continue the program!
