Like I mentioned beforehand, make the best of every single situation and have fun. Living and doing research in Detroit, your hometown, is a wonderful opportunity that should not be wasted. Even though you have learned and lived in Detroit all your life, make the effort to find new hidden gems in the city. Detroit as you have come to know it is your home, take the time out of your day to give back to the city and especially the community that saw you grow. No matter what happens throughout your career once all is said and done, you cannot forget the community that saw you grow and gave you the knowledge and opportunity to be where you are at this very moment.  Every opportunity such as working with Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision will give you new connections and possibilities that will accompany you throughout undergraduate and graduate school.  All in all, take everything that you know and will learn through DCBRP and work at SDEV and make the best out of your education, knowing that the impacts that are made in the city will have lasting effects.

  1. I am searching for those “hidden gems” as well. I found some wonderful places just ridding my bike through the inner city and Riverfront. If you find something awesome let us know! Good luck with your research!
