Third Semana: Thriving Scene – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Third Semana: Thriving Scene

As the days continue to trickle on by, and simple tasks start to become daily routines, interesting events have started to grab my attention. Overall, SDEV is an awesome place the puts forth the community and its own resident at the forefront of their mission statement. As a direct result of this, all of workers unite together in an effort to foster a welcoming community and environment both inside our work space and outside of it as we represent our organization across Detroit. Co-Worker communication and livelihood above all else is something that stand above the rest. Everyone at the office is not only super friendly, but like minded, as result you are present with the perfect formula to create efficient progress. One way this comes into play is simply by spending time with the other workers during lunch break in an effort to not only relax but share ideas and notions. From having food from local restaurants at Cadillac garden to getting Bucharest and taking it to the Clark Park.

This small network of people not only allows us to have someone to talk to during lunch time, but it also fosters a unique situation in which we can bounce ideas back and forth.  Giving us valuable time to not only practice what we may have to say at future meetings. Although at times this process may be performed in an indirect manner one way or another you are always learning someway to better your self presentation. This is is ultimately something very crucial since the main emphasis of our project is meeting with local business owners and stakeholders, along side current residents. Overall, the scenery that is displayed at our placement is something that I did not expect nor have I ever experienced before and now I am pretty glad I have.

Much of what said in the previous paragraphs culminated into today’s meeting with a regional organization that specifically deals with transportation and air quality needs at a region wide level across seven different counties.SEMCOGVIEW

Not only did the meeting play out pretty smoothly, but we were also treated with a surprise. Here we can see quite the view from the 14th floor of the office space.

Just below on the ground floor a couple blocks away, Shannon suggested that we wander into a local community garden. Not only was it an awesome idea, but we also got to see just how much of an effect a small community garden can be when it is planned into one of the busiest streets of the downtown area. Not only was it beautifully executed, but it also had quite the attention grabbers.

  1. Juan,

I’m happy you’re enjoying your placement! It’s really refreshing to interact with likeminded individuals do something that they’re passionate about, huh? That’s what I want to when I grow up to be big and strong. Do you mind if I ask where you found that community garden? Is it the one on Shelby and Lafayette? It looks really cool.
