One observation that stands out above all is a sense of community within Detroit. Since my start at Detroit Food Academy, I have attended several nonprofit organization meetings that discussed ways to better the education system and strengthen the community. Apparently, these meetings are held all over Detroit and are perfect for networking. As a result, I have met some extraordinary leaders and students that play key roles in changing the culture of Detroit. For example, today I met Principle Steven McGhee who works at Central Collegiate Academy. He is a prominent figure in Detroit’s education system and had some powerful words about the potential of this city. I left that meeting inspired!
To the left is a picture of a youth meeting I attended this week. It was a very positive and informative session that showcased some of Detroit’s youth leaders. These young men are smart and active within their communities. I enjoyed listening to their stories and suggestions as to how organization leaders should improve youth programs throughout Detroit. Also, this was a rewarding experience because it proved that the youth really do care about their community.
Pre-orientation with DFA students was this week and I had a blast! We took a field trip to Belle Isle and participated in group activities designed to build relationships. I was especially impressed by their positive attitude and tolerance of so many different personality types within the groups. To the right is a picture of one particular challenge where students had to collaborate and construct a tower using dry pasta and marshmallows! Not only was this challenge fun, but I also had an opportunity to learn how each student operates to solve a problem. They made me feel comfortable by sharing their life stories and actively engaged in conversation. Already, I can see that this summer will be special and possibly life-changing!
