Week 1 Entry – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 1 Entry

Dear Harrison,

This summer is an important time, and there’s a lot that you have to complete. Firstly, make the most of the really awesome community that you’re living with for this time. Try to go out and have fun with them a lot, and explore the city with new people. That’s important, and probably the most valuable opportunity that we’ve been given this summer, but don’t feel like you have to pack all of your experiences into the first week. Take your time and get settled in. Secondly, keep your goals in mind and don’t let the surplus of time distract you from the importance of daily practice, reading, and learning. Don’t forget that your internship is the reason that you’re allowed to have this experience, and do your best to leave the Detroit Food Academy with positive changes. Be a productive and positive worker. Working daily is the most exciting prospect of the summer for me at this time. Use your time to explore Detroit as well. I have limited experience with the city, so this is a great time to discover something new. Try to explore your interests in the city, find some local music, or whatever you feel like. The point is to be mindful of how you interact with the city, and how much value you can pull out of this experience.

Have a great summer,

Harrison
