Week 2 by Marjai! – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 2 by Marjai!

I am working at the Detroit Food Academy which is a non profit that works in around 8 Detroit High Schools to teach business skills and entrepreneurship through cooking (if you want a better description its beautifully laid out on their website). My summer research project (with Harrison) will be making a storytelling project of some sort capture the voices of students in their summer academy (which is a 5 week program for 24 of the students that were in the school year).

I feel like i am almost in the groove (I need to regulate my sleep cycle though..) and got this working life. I am especially starting to learn that working with youth (even if not directly, like we are currently) varies a lot more than “average” jobs (like for instance there is like one or two more weeks of school, after that its gonna change a lot) and being an intern things also vary, because you do what is needed at the time, not necessarily what you want to do. And I get bored easily so i like switching it up.

Detroit has still been good. I like knowing the part of the city that I reside on. So I know that portion of campus and the portion of midtown that I work. Excited to learn more about the city as a whole. Yesterday one of my suite mates and some of my friends from bible study went to explore downtown and it was really amazing. Being from Lansing, i am not use to REALLY tall buildings that hurt your neck to look up at and i was amazed!!! and I got to eat WATER ICE!!!! (That is what is in the picture). I have only every had it in Philadelphia (where I was born, but i moved to Michigan at 7) so to find it here, i am definitely starting to feel good feelings about this city :).

  1. I’m so happy you’re enjoying your internship. I can’t wait to read about your interactions with the teens and the experiences in the program. Also, downtown was amazing! Thanks for bringing me along!
