I find it to be good timing that we are assigned to write about the work our organizations have done in the community when today, Thursday the 15th was the annual Southwest Detroit Business Association breakfast. In attendance were the owners of the most successful Southwest Detroit businesses, both new and old. Thus, this morning I was able to hear from a diverse group of people what the effect of my organization has been in my community for the last 60 years. If I could summarize the work in one word it would be: potential. Whether it is providing resources to increase the ability of a business to grow or aiding in eradicating barriers that prevented entrepreneurs from prospering, the people I work with strive to make the community a better place to do business.
This success has carried over to my project of the Business Improvement District, the SDBA has also successfully been able to gain funding to make the physical environment conducive to business. Both business owners and resident have enjoyed the changes made over the years. The picture I took was a “SW” branded bike rack placed at the intersection of Vernor and Michigan Avenue, where the Michigan Central Station is located. It is through work such as the SDBA’s that make sure entire regions are able to compete for business and investment dollars with other areas such as midtown and downtown Detroit.
Hi Alex! I find it interesting that you are working on a business project with your nonprofit. I am working on one as well. It is also great to hear that the business that you are working with provides many resources and is involved greatly in the community! Keep up the great work with your project!
