At SDEV, I’ve been noticing how everything requires the collaborative effort of multiple groups. With that, I’ve also noticed how much everyone is willing to help each other out. We have volunteers working in our gardens every weekend, many who are from large corporations. We are planning a Garden Party fundraiser and many of those on the planning committee are from other local organizations. We have an annual tire sweep coming up where we pick up and recycle illegally dumped tires from all over Southwest Detroit. For this event, we have volunteer truck drivers bringing their trucks, teenage volunteers to pick up tires, and meals donated from local businesses. It is the combined effort of organizations and community that is making a difference.
I have been going to a lot of different groups that are trying to influence the health of Detroit residents through environmental initiatives. I’m starting to make connections and recognize the same faces at a lot of these events. It’s cool to have found this community of people with similar goal. The City of Detroit is making a commitment to the environment by the creating the Office for Sustainability. I had the opportunity to hear the Director of Sustainability speak today and loved learning about all of his ideas for the city.
I was planning on posting a picture of one of the urban gardens outside of SDEV. The garden is a great space because it provides healthy food to the community and adds a greenspace for the residents to enjoy. I park right next to it and enjoy having this view be the start and end of my workday.
