Week 3 DCBRP – Micah Griggs – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 3 DCBRP – Micah Griggs

I have been observing the extensive and intensive work that EcoWorks does, particularly my supervisor, and why it’s so important. Advocating for low income residents in multifamily affordable housing is hard but much needed work. There are so many moving parts and so many stakeholders that are and should be involved. The most valuable thing I’ve observed thus far is the effort to keep the community and the residents first. Sometimes, energy efficiency and sustainability work leaves a lot of people out of the conversation and behind due to jargon and lack of awareness. However, it’s important to be mindful of the language we use and be able to talk with residents about their living conditions regardless of their knowledge on energy efficiency.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending my first Pride Parade 🌈 with some fellow participants of DCBRP. It was such a refreshing experience and I loved seeing so many people there in unity. I was reminded of my role as a privileged identity, being a heterosexual woman: to build a more tolerant community. Thanks for the reminder, Pride. I’m on it.
