Week 7 || Conversing

I’ve observed a lot of cultural differences when conversing with our cohort. We’ve talked about different methods of child raising (corporal punishment in particular), feminism, gender inequality, etc. To say the least, it was an insightful discussion. However, I can also see how cultural differences lead to conflicts if neither side understands each other. In response to a series of conversations, I wrote a poem regarding feminism.

White feminism is the driver who honks as soon as the light turns green

It is the boy who snaps girl’s bra straps, pulls her hair and says, “It’s because I like you”

White feminism is the teacher only calling on boy’s butt tells every parent with a daughter that she needs to participate

White hands cover colored mouths but closed mouths don’t get fed

For some, this isn’t a gender issue

This is a societal issue

In America, there’s a reason why racial pronouns exist

In America, there’s a reason why financial pronouns exist

I am a Black woman

I am a Poor woman

I am not just a woman

My identities can’t be separated nor used as a token character

I will not fill your diversity quota, be the only brown face in your march

My Womanhood is multi-faceted like my oppression

Gender is only one
