Week 6 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 6

Lately I have been wondering about what has been going well so far in the city of Detroit and where we have not made much progress. One thing that I realized that, for all the work done to bring the city back from where it was before, we are still the canary in the coal mine for the country. This city represents every problem an American city could face. Every. Single. One. Education, transportation, nutrition, job creation and destruction, and housing come to mind.

One solution to all those problems that continues to come up is letting the free market choose the winners and losers. While I consider myself a free-market capitalist, I do not believe a free market utopia like the one hawked about by right-wingers is right for this country. At least, not now. Too many people who are not prepared to fairly compete in a free market exist that would be hurt by being hurled into such a system.
