Week 7 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 7

What I have found interesting is the conflicting viewpoints that people have taken when working to better parts of the city. As in my last blog, many people have taken free market or business-like approaches to bettering neighborhoods while others have taken a more community based attitude. While those different viewpoints are not mutually exclusive, they do become so in the real world.

Many times, these differing ideas clash in public meetings discussing solutions to problems in the city like gentrification and crime. This clashing itself could be seen as a detriment to current efforts to improve the city but I see it differently. These butting of heads are inevitable and the sooner we have such discussions, the better. It is important that we realize both the good and bad of different policies to make Detroit great for everyone.
