week seven – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

week seven

One thing that has stood out to me is the amount of garbage found in vacant lots in Detroit. This wasn’t one particular experience, but just something I’ve noticed while driving around the city. I always see illegally dumped furniture, tires, and just trash in general. On one street near my placement there is an abandoned boat full of trash next to the road. It’s sad that this is so common in Detroit. With the city being so big, it’s hard to keep all parts of it clean. At the same time though, if this trash was located downtown it would immediately be picked up by a city official. The city is trying to address the problem by allowing people to report illegal dumping locations on the improve Detroit app. Hopefully this will help keep areas other than downtown clean. I just really wonder who is doing all of this dumping and what would be a solution to the problem. Near my placement, we just put a community dumpster out so people will have a place to properly get rid of some of their bulk items. It makes me wonder if the city should have community dumpsters for residents to use.
