Week #8 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week #8

An important recurrent theme in our weekly meetings is how to enact change/how to help communities. We have learned that it is important not to impose your view of what us best on a community because it may not be the best for them. At first, we talked about this in a general sense, but as the program has gone on, I have been able to see tangible projects related to this idea. When we visited Brilliant Detroit, we also visited a laundromat that was a gym because that was what the community wanted and needed. Half of the battle is listening to the residents of a community; the ones that will be affected by change should have the largest voice in what happens to them. This may seem intuitive, but it is much harder to successfully do that many people think. Any decision that affects a community should be towards a goal that the community has agreed on.
