Week 9 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 9

The Origins of the Urban Crisis taught me largely about the housing market in Detroit because that’s what I was interested in. As I read, I thought about how my family has migrated from Arkansas and the tribulations that they went through as my great grandparents came back from the war, and the struggles that they went through in relation to getting houses in Detroit. This book also really made me think about the difficulties that black men who fought for their country had to go through to be given the housing promised to them. As black people began to get houses in Detroit and spaced themselves out in certain portions of the city, I thought it was interesting to think of that in relation to my family. My family is spaced throughout the city and it’s just intriguing to think about how we all got here and the efforts made from my older family members to settling us in the city. This book really made me think and spark conversation with my family members about how they got to the city and the experiences they had when coming here.
