Dear Rai – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Dear Rai

Dear Rai,

You found out about this program a few days before the application was due and immediately filled out the application. You prayed that you could get your recommendations in on time and  you did it! Great job girl!

My expectations for the myself during the program is to make a great impression with my supervisors and make the most out of my experience. I will be working with Detroit Youth in a sports camp and my goal is to provide them with the encouragement, leadership skills, and mentorship that they may not receive or may lack. Many children and teens in the city of Detroit don’t get the opportunity to participate in sports such as lacrosse, tennis, golf, archery, and soccer because they are not traditional in the city but I’m happy to see that the organization I work with (Chandler Park Conservancy) offers those sports to the children in their summer program. I think that there is some major work to be done to improve the city of Detroit, but the continuous efforts that are being put into helping and supporting the community have been a great start to seeing a better and safer city.

I hear Chandler Park Conservancy is really nice and how neat that these kids get to try out new things. I would really love to hear more about the childrens’ response to the Park’s efforts and even the changes that will happen for the kids over the course of these eight weeks.

  2. Hey Rai! It was so cool hearing about Chandler Park Conservancy when you guys stopped by Friends of Parkside this week. I’m definitely looking forward to hopefully working together more this summer! I think it’s awesome that this organization is making it possible for a lot of Detroit kids to get involved in sports that are pretty unique, especially for the city.
