Track 2: Let’s Get It Started | #2 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Track 2: Let’s Get It Started | #2

The Chandler Park Conservancy was created in 2014 and is a non-profit organization focused on the betterment of the eastside of Detroit. According to my supervisor, there is a stigma around Chandler Park that stems from a few years ago that still carry weight in the community. The Chandler Park Conservancy is working tirelessly to change this. There are two main staff members, Alex Allen and Yvette Bass. They both consider the company pillars, which is recreation, conservation, education, and transformation, when making any decisions for the park.

This summer, I will have multiple projects. The main one is overseeing a youth summer sports camp that will take place at park in the area. I will be responsible for planning, developing rosters, and supervising youth workers. Additionally, I will be creating surveys to track the community’s engagement with the many amenities found in the park (water park, tennis courts, golf course, etc.).

My first week here has been great. I”m very familiar with the area so it has bee nice to be back.
