Hellcats & The Lodge – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Hellcats & The Lodge

As a native Detroiter, I know all about the love for Hellcats, formerly known as Dodge Chargers. Every summer, I hear the clubs of Dodge Chargers, Challengers and 300s racing down Detroit streets. For me, I love seeing the cars racing when its appropriate. For the incident that occurred on the Lodge freeway, it was out of line. Holding traffic for Instagram videos was inconsiderate, to say the least. In the age of technology, I find that Millenials love to make the next viral video and that definitely happened. Many Detroiters find that racing in any capacity on the streets or freeway is not safe and will, unfortunately, cause preventable tragedies. In order to appease both parties, I think that the Detroit Police Department should create a day of racing for Detroiters to safely enjoy their cars. By doing this, there should be a reduced risk of tragedy while having fun.

The viral video of the cars on the Lodge was the first thing that I thought about when I saw this week’s prompt. I think your idea about creating a day to race would be good. Or designating an area for cars to race, so other cars that are not racing are not affected like they were in this situation.
