Week 6- Art? – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 6- Art?

Since this is freestyle this is what I’m thinking about

I did not go into an art school because I was uncertain if I wanted to do that as a career. There is a lot of pressure to get a good paying job, even on myself. One of the main reasons I wanted to go to college is so I had a better chance of being financially stable later on in life, not necessarily rich but not living paycheck to paycheck either. I mainly chose LSA because I could just switch majors if I really wanted to, I am still hesitant on the idea of having to narrow in on one single route.

I think I have started to realize that maybe I should seriously consider going into the arts for a career, or something related to that. I thought about it well before but I think this experience is starting to solidify the idea. I am still uncertain of what I want to do exactly because I do not know where I am going to fit into that. My favorite part of my internship is working on this thing called the living wall. This has the agenda, little polaroid pictures that I take of the students, hand drawn and printed pictures, and anything else to reflect on the day. I love making the pictures but I have also enjoyed interacting with the students and walking around all day to see everything going on in the summer program.

I am going to continue to study International Studies and have a minor in Art & Design. I do not think I am going to transfer to STAMPS or another art school since I am still interested in learning about International Studies. I feel like it would benefit me to continue even if I might not actually go into that field after college.

  1. Brenda- I’m always super impressed by your art- you’re very talented! Thank you for decorating our dorm with your artwork; it makes it a nice environment to be in. I hope you continue to find ways to make art since it sounds like that is very important to you. And I think it’s really great that you get to work on the living wall since you have artistic skills.

    Hi Brenda!

I love your artwork! I too understand the pressure of being financially stable but also being in a career you are happy with. You could possibly sell some of your art now as you are learning just to see where it could take you. Wishing you the best!

Brenda, that is amazing! I am excited you are able to pair your interests together! Also, what Miriam said, thank you for decorating our dorm space with your work!
