Week 6 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 6

My experience in the program thus far has been incredibly enjoyable. I have been able to make new connections to Detroit that I never thought possible simply because I wasn’t a resident. Working at Eastern Market has been the highlight of my time here and I’ve found it to be where I feel the most connected to Detroiters. Everyone I’ve met is very kind to me.
Working on the farm, for someone like me, is a blast. I am finally developing a green thumb, which I never thought to be possible. I’m becoming more mindful about where my food is from and eat more fruits and vegetables. I have enjoyed preparing the things I purchase from the stand at Eastern Market.
Seeing the impact the organization has had on the community is incredible. We all share the same interest in gardening, but still have so many differences. It is wonderful to see people with different skills so willing to offer them to their neighbors should they need help.
