An experience that has stood out to me from this program outside of my placement has been making dinner with my suitemates. Before starting the program, I was nervous about cooking for myself every night because I am used to sharing cooking and cleaning with 15 other people in my co-op. That means that I do five hours of chores a week, but I don’t cook the dinner every night during the school year. I’m also used to cooking for 15 people so I wasn’t sure about food waste when cooking for one to four people. I was excited when I find out that the people I would be living with also wanted to cook together, and it’s been really nice every time we do collaborate. Our dinner last night was very good. There’s something relaxing about knowing that I can feed myself and other people well. We had mustard greens that were gifted to me on Friday, and tacos with veggies we sautéed. The tables in the kitchen area was being used for laundry sorting by the dorm staff, so we sat on the floor and ate our food. Finding time and energy to cook has been challenging the past couple weeks so it was really nice to make a real meal together again. Cooking together has been a way to do something for myself that is the kind of lifestyle I am trying to cultivate where I take good care of myself.

I think it’s awesome that y’all cook and share meals together! Food is such a great way to connect with others and I feel like it’s becoming more and more underappreciated in our society, so it’s great to hear and see y’all doing this consistently. 🙂
Hi Miriam! I personally love seeing all of you cook together. The way you all work together when cooking, menu ideas, and splitting the cost is not only smart but super thoughtful.
Miriam, thank you for all the delicious meals you have made us! I am becoming a better cook through learning from you. I am so happy we often cook meals all together! Those tacos were super good.
