week six – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

week six

Through the entirety of the program, I learned a few things. One, a city makes a person who they are. The closer someone is to there city the more their city influences them. This can be both negative and positive. First, I want to talk about the negative. Not because I want to be a pessimist but because I do not want my consciousness focused on the lower perspective when I am trying to focus on the positive attributes of a city. Now, when looking at negatives major influences are music and media. The reason I argue this is that it not also affects those who watch the media and listen to the music it also affects those who it represents. This is because those who are outside the community watch the media and listen to the same media those in the community does. However, due the fact that media only represented certain people in the community it can negatively affect those in the community as it give the members a negative bias. One primary examples of this in music. Proven through research from Dr. Taylor, a researcher on brain function, Music have positive and negative effects.  Seen in her research as it shows more aggressive music can negative affect the development of neurons. Along with history, as ancient Chinese characters represent music and medicine very similar as they believed that music in some cases were medicine.  Looking at urban communities it is seen that music is toxic as it talks about murder, drugs, and other behaviors that produce a toxic mindset and behavioral pattern.  Along with this, those of outside communities as their vision of those in urban environments are negatively impacted.  Now that negatives are discussed, positive can be expanded.

One of the main positives of having a bound to your city is the communal bond citizens have.

Seen as research proves that those that have no community bond or sense of family tend to be those who fall into the traps portrayed in media. As a result being in a positive community can help mold individuals in a way that help take steps forward in their community; their city; their life.
