Week 9 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 9

Welp, We are here and our time has come to an end. I truly say I didn’t know the huge impact that being in this program has been. The biggest lesson I believe that I gained from this experience that I didn’t have an understanding of in the first week is the way I need to be a conscious consumer. At my placement, I learned the importance of buying locally and supporting businesses of color by working with all the FoodLab businesses. By being able to meet and talk to small business owners I truly understand the efforts it takes to run a business and the sacrifices they make to start their businesses. Beyond this, many of these businesses make sure they source their resources locally so money is circulated throughout the community. With that being said, I now have a passion to patron these businesses because I am aware of the value it holds. I am so happy to understand this and implement it in my life.
