A Step in the Right Direction – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

A Step in the Right Direction

I recently began working with another organization alongside FoodLab and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity. At Osborn Neighborhood Alliance, I am in the process of creating a handbook for the organization (similar to the handbook and HR rep would make), as they are just separating from a larger organization and becoming their own smaller independent one. Creating this handbook has given me a great feel of what it would be like to work in the office and the documents I would create once I graduate from Michigan. Additionally, the work I have been doing at Osborn Neighborhood Alliance has influenced me and even allowed the opportunity to possibly do some at FoodLab, which will allow the opportunity for even more experience. Because doing this work is also similar to the career path I want to pursue in the near future, I value this opportunity very much.

In addition to this, Osborn Neighborhood Alliance is also allowing me to create my own project in whatever I deem to be the most beneficial to myself and my career path (while also of course benefitting the organization). This has given me a great opportunity to get a head start on experience that is directly in the field in which I would like to go into. I’m very excited to see where this will all go!

  1. Hey Torisa!
It’s great to see that you have some flexibility in your projects to best serve your orgs and further your career goals! My site, HOPE Village Revitalization, recently separated from a larger network (Focus: HOPE) late last year and is working to increase their impact in the community just like Osborn Neighborhood Alliance. I empathize greatly with our orgs, as my student group on campus, GlobeMed at UMich, is also beginning the process of separating from our national network to become our own independent organization. This process is much more difficult than anyone expects and is a consistent uphill battle, and every task you are doing to support them throughout is incredible!
