Week One: My City – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week One: My City

Hello! My name is Diya Mitchell and I am a rising sophomore at the University of Michigan. To me, a community is a group of people living in a specific area that share similarities and differences, yet they live as one. They understand each other’s culture, they understand the land. Detroit is a community filled with resiliency and pride, which is one of the few reasons as to why I chose to do community work in my city. I love to network and I also have a curiosity of learning the laws and how it affects my community. This summer I’d like to strengthen both those skills and my public speaking/ presentation skills. I think having a new found knowledge of how things operate in Detroit and teaching others about the history would make me proud.

    Hi Diya,
I am also interested in the laws that are affecting the Detroit community. I come from a big city that has lots of laws that impact people of color at a higher rate. I also want to gain more knowledge of Detroit and its history ( i know a little bit of its history from courses I previously took). Let me know if you here any interesting information about Detroit 🙂

  2. Diya really loved reading about your love for Detroit. You definitely have to tell me about your favorite places in the city!

  3. Hey Diya! Your passion for your city is inspiring. If you learn any good networking tips, let me know- I also want to strength that skill this summer! 🙂
