Week One: Introductions! – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week One: Introductions!

Hi everyone! My name is Regina or Reggie (either is fine), and I’m studying History and Spanish, both of which I’ll be practicing this summer with the Clark Park Coalition. I see a community as any group. I believe that a strong community is one made up of members who actively choose to be part of the group, who value one another and the group goals and who make it their mission to be united.
From the first couple of days at my site, I can tell that interacting with many moving pieces and people will be an essential skill for me over the course of my project. In the past, I’ve done some work with school- or sport-based programs, and I feel relatively confident in my ability to work with varying audiences (students, parents, directors, etc.) because of this and some work experiences. I am looking forward to gaining experience in a professional and academic role while learning more about Detroit along the way. There’s something to learn from everyone, so my goal for the summer is to try to soak up as much as I can from those around me (you all included)!

  1. Hi Reggie! It was really nice getting to meet you and talk with you for a bit these past few days. I definitely also think learning is a big theme for me this summer, whether it’s learning through talking with people, learning at my organization, or learning in all the places and events in Detroit. Look forward to the next few weeks, and good luck with the rest of this week!

  2. Hi Reggie! I am also studying History, and plan to use skills from that subject matter in my research too. Wish you the best this summer 🙂
