I had the opportunity to participate in another UM program this Summer and as a result I am started the CBRP program late. I literally flew back, went home for a day and then moved into the dorms the next! Although it was a fast transition I am glad to be here. Everyone already knows everyone and I am still learning names but it’s ok because everyone I’ve meet is super nice!
This past Tuesday was my first day at the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation or DHDC for short and I like it thus far. The project I’m working on is figuring out why smoking is so popular within the Latino community. The goal is to decrease the use of tobacco; especially for pregnant mothers and youth. Given that the project is new to the organization things are pretty slow here, I’ve mostly just been doing A LOT of reading. Can you keep a secret? Yes? Well….(says in hushed tones), I’m writing this blog post at work. 🙂
I chose this site because I love the Spanish language and the project sounded really interesting. The funny part is that I have mostly been speaking in English here; I suppose I am shy when it comes to my Spanish. I love listening to the office conversations though because they are often in Spanglish and it’s great. My goal will be to start using my Spanish and Spanglish skills next week!
Well it’s just week 1 for me so I don’t have much more to say but more to come! 🙂

Welcome! I am glad you can write this blog at work. I hope your passion and enthusiasm to work with a Latino community and a Spanish-speaking community. Have fun!
