Candace at InsideOut – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Candace at InsideOut

Hello all,

Unfortunately I had a late start here at InsideOut. My supervisor had a death in the family so was not in the office. The first week was a little rough just because it seemed things at the office were unsettling for my supervisor who was somewhat behind due to her loss. I was fortunate though, to be able to tag along with another employee of the organization who frequents the many Detroit Public Schools in the area. I was able to judge a fifth and sixth grade poetry slam, work with 1st and 2nd graders on their poetry, talk to high school students about poetry, and be a part of a healthy habit event for another elementary school. It was great fun and I really enjoyed being involved in the schools. As of now, my sponsor has declared goals for my time here and tasks that I must complete. I am very happy with them and can’t wait to get started. Most of it involves developing curriculum and assisting the high schools and their students with their programming; which is exactly what I am interested in!

That’s all for now!

  1. I’m sorry things have been slow starting up at Inside out but it sounds great that you had the opportunity to do something you already have a passion for – I hope that this week will be better but you still get to do fun things!
