Door to Door to Door to Door – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Door to Door to Door to Door

Wellllllll, as you all know by now (because you read all my post) our first community meeting is this Friday!  We have been preparing for the meeting a lot and one of our main methods of getting the word out was door to door.  Being a member of the boy scouts I have done many door to door handouts and I must say the entire process is exhausting.  The printing, the neighborhood selection, the local business handout, the door to door hand out, and the explanation to community members of what you why you are on their doorstep all must be done and done correctly.  We left the office a little later than we originally planned because we got caught up in revising our upcoming meeting’s agenda.

When we got out to the River Rouge we met up with community member Ebony.  First we distributed our beautiful flyers to local businesses.  Gas stations, supermarkets, restaurants, dry cleaners and bars gladly excepted our flyers and most allowed us to hang them somewhere within the store so residents could easily see them.  I was surprised they were so generous and so willing to help a few of the business owners and employees stated they would try to attend the community meeting.  After we passed out a substantial amount of flyers to the local businesses it was time to get down to the residential areas and begin are flyering.  Many of the residents we came across we took time out and explain to them exactly why we were having a community meeting in River Rouge.  A lot of the residents agreed that pollution was a large problem and really wanted to know more.  This was really encouraging, I really think the community meeting will be a good turn out and everything will go well!
