It is amazing how much experience I have gained here in such a short period of time. Working with FoodLab has definitely made me more aware of my surroundings, the City, policies, and much more!
I thought I was pretty savvy with my technical skills, but I was wrong. Working at FoodLab has allowed me to enhance my skills on Excel and Word and has allowed me to optimize and build my professional writing skills.
My supervisor, Jess, is such an amazing person, leader, and inspiration to me that words do not give her justice. She recently took me to DAY: Project’s 10 year anniversary a few weeks ago. Not only was I able to learn about the Asian history in Detroit and Hamtramck, but I was able to explore areas where the Asian population has/is prevalent. It was quite shocking to realize how little I knew about the history. It was definitely an eye-opening experience. That experience has opened up outlets for me to do research on Asian culture and history of racism in the City of Detroit. It is quite extensive, to say the least.

Wow Purabi, that’s realy interesting. I would love to learn about some of the Asian history of Detroit, all too often I think Detroit can be reduced to a literal black and white understanding… a history encompassing only the race/enthnicities of African American and Caucasian. But there are so many more cultures here, including Asian and Chaldean and Arabic and Caribbean, that it is such a shame for us to only learn about those two. Your post really made me remember how much I still have to learn about Detroit by not only looking deeply but also broadly.
