Week 8 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 8

I can hardly believe that I am almost done with the program and I am more busy than ever. I feel anxious yet excited about finally making considerable gains in my project. It takes me a while to get used to things and working full time in an office was no exception. Before working at FOP, I’d never had a full time job or a job with flexibility in my assignments. As a result, this experience has been a huge eye opener for me in terms of how the real world works and how I fit in it.

First, I HATE waking up so early! I must set more than ten alarms each morning, only to press snooze or ignore them. When I finally do get up, I have less than 30 minutes to get ready…not good. I also barely have time to eat breakfast or pack a lunch. Once I get to work, I try to balance working on my project and any other duties that I have to perform.
When I first started work, was not used to having so much control over what I did. I would slack off a little like I do at school. Then, at home, I would not (and still don’t) have the energy to work on my project. Lately however, even though my time at FOP is almost over, I’ve learned how important it is to use my time at work wisely.

  1. I understand your morning struggle, haha. This is the first time I have had a 9-5 job and had to get up every day at the same time since probably high school. My project is also starting to speed up which is sucking up a lot of my time too, but I agree it is all definitely an eye opener!
