Week 7 – La Rosita

One of my favorite experiences I’ve had in Detroit actually started as a rather rough morning. A few weeks ago I woke up about 20 minutes late and as I was frantically running around the apartment I realized we were almost entirely out of food. I had nothing to pack for lunch! This unfortunate scenario, however, was what led to me asking around my office about the best places to eat in the neighborhood. I work in Southwest Detroit, so I knew there were many Latinx owned businesses in the area. Yet what I didn’t know until my coworkers told me, was that just two blocks down our street what a hidden gem, La Rosita. La Rosita is both a restaurant and Mexican market, full of anything you could ever need! Not only was their lunch menu full of tasty food and great deals, but they also had a fun environment and welcoming staff. Decorations were colorful and light shone through the windows as a variety of people came through the store. There were families eating lunch before sending their kids off to camp, as well as parents just doing their weekly groceries. It was great to get out of the office to enjoy lunch at a local business. I definitely hope to go again before the summer ends, though hopefully it’s a better planned event next time and not a consequence of sleeping through my alarm!
