Week 8 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Week 8

No matter how tired I am after work, I always look forward to the Tuesday or Thursday events because they always open my eyes to new things. There is no one particular event that I’d like to talk about, but there has been quite a few that have made me rethink and evaluate everything that I am doing in my life. Sure, I am from the city and I was aware of many of the issues in the city, but there were also things that I did not know. For example, I wasn’t aware of the goals and missions of so many of the non profits who work so hard doing community development or the people who try so hard to be heard at local meetings that discuss plans for the city. We have had great opportunities such as visiting the Detroit Historical Museum a couple times and also going to the Juneteenth event and learning about the social injustices around the city. The meetings have proved to be a successful and necessary part of the program.
