This article reported on conversations between Detroit and Grosse Pointe’s city governments to remove a physical barrier between the two cities. The barrier currently blocks traffic on Kercheval with the intent of increasing foot traffic to local businesses on the street. The removal of the barrier is largely dependent on a land sale. If the proposal passes, the physical barrier will come down. This is exciting because, as the article mentions, this physical barrier works with the symbolic barriers between Detroit and Grosse Pointe to make Grosse Pointe feel unwelcome to Detroiters. While there is still much work to be done to integrate Detroiters and Grosse Pointers, the removal of the barrier would be a good first step taken by these cities to create a better community for their residents.
