Cohort Experience! -Week 7 – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Cohort Experience! -Week 7

Coming into DCERP, I didn’t expect to get the opportunity to meet and relate to so many supportive people who have similar values as me. I appreciate how whenever a new topic of injustice is discussed in our breakout or learning groups we can all relate and have similar standpoints of the issue. It’s also comforting to know that we all have some form of passion for equity in the community. Through the weeks, I examined how when one of us has an idea we can elaborate on that idea and won’t put one another down, I appreciate the respect level of the cohort, and how we interact with one another. I also admire how in our Tuesdays and Thursday meetings can learn and expand my knowledge on new topics that I don’t have the opportunity to talk about at my placement such as immigration laws and public policy. Overall, I’m proud of the cohort for remaining close even in a virtual setting and having little to no prior opportunity of meeting each other beforehand, I appreciate our group chats and hope we can meet in person soon, with precautions of course! 🙂

  1. I had the same feeling this summer. I liked our discussions – whether through break-out rooms or our learning groups. We were able to talk about prevalent issues and have discussions about them without putting anyone down. I’m glad this cohort was able to stay close despite the distances.

  2. I definitely agree with your post! I really enjoyed experiencing a program with other social justice focused fellows. I grew up in a small, conservative, white-washed town and often felt like I was ostracized for my strong beliefs. I am glad we all started in a similar place in terms of our social justice journey. We all begin with mutual respect and value for human life, and acknowledge the experiences of marginalized communities.
