June Teenth is the celebration of the emancipation of African Americans. This year, St. John’s Hospital (a partner of Nortown) hosted a health fair along the Connor Creek Greenway with many events and organizations present to raise awareness for the community. The program manager of St. John’s asked me to volunteer for the registration table so I wore this beautiful orange shirt and worked alongside another young lady from Americorp. It was a beautiful day, great weather, and an active community that came out. The fair hosted free blood pressure screenings, free massages (which I got myself one at the end, hehe), the Hustle with Fast Freddie, Tai Chi, Yoga, etc. It was just a fun couple of hours and I enjoyed talking to the residents of the community — some older people were talkers and fairly entertaining especially since I was just sitting.
I particularly enjoyed this collaboration with St. John’s and the opportunity to meet those in the Hospital & Healthcare field as that is where I envision myself in the future. Experiencing one of the many parts of their jobs was informative for me. I’ve been getting a lot out of working with Nortown — as I said before, Nortown is small but has many connections.
Wow this sounds very exciting Cathy. I have never heard of this event, my dad works closely with St. Johns he might have been in attendance. Do you know if it is a yearly thing? I would like to go sometime!
