*Warning* Gushing about my organization… – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

*Warning* Gushing about my organization…

To work with people who are so dedicated to living and playing in the communities in which they work and being so dedicated to revitalizing metro Detroit is truly remarkable. I consider myself to be someone who sees hope in everywhere and believes in being kind to everyone and work your hardest for everything. And to work with people who are 200% better than me at doing just that is wonderful. I’ve been around selfish people for too long and to see such selfless work is quite reward. I’m afraid that I may have seen too much and will have expectations for the world outside of the nonprofit world (which is not as beautiful). I just really felt at home this summer which is great and I am so thankful to have been a part of this organization.

But, also these kind, hardworking, smart individuals have given me quite a few different perspectives on Detroit and all the happenings around this city. These people know city government, city planning, etc. So, I definitely trust their judgement over many other judgement. They get excited over the tiniest things in the city so when the media including the national media explode about Detroit being the largest city to file for bankruptcy even in history – they get upset, really upset. Honestly, I am so glad I worked here or I would still be the person that would have be stuck in the “Detroit has been destroyed because of the white flight and poor Detroit, it just is always going to suck” kind of mentality when I honestly had no idea what I was talking about.

So, here are some awesome perspective on Detroit if  you guys wanted to read: http://www.michigansuburbsalliance.org/2013/07/19/a-bankrupt-narrative/

Sorry for all the gush-age. I just getting really excited about nice people and learning new things.

  1. I’m so happy you got a different perspective out of the deal! It sounds like your organization was fantastic to work with! I really like your self-less/selfish assessment — I think it is really true a lot of (usually for-profit) organizations (and people in general) tend to act pretty selfishly so it’s very cool to see people dedicate their lives/time/effort to things other than themselves. It’s really valuable to see that!
